- Author: Jess B.Got a tuna roll to go and it was 9$, it just had tuna in it. Tasted fresh and was delicious, has generous amount of fish as well. Prob would order takeout sushi here again, it did only open at 3:30 though which kinda sucked.
- Author: Johnny N.My roommates ex-situationship RAVED about this place before she dumped him, and I actually really trusted her rec because she just seemed like the type to really know her sushi. You know what I mean? I read it was more geared toward takeout, but I always like to see what the vibe is so I came on a Tuesday at 5pm after a 22k step day. I initially walked into the wrong building, and the doorman directed me to go "through the smoke shop" to get to Sushi 35 West. "Smoke shop?" I said utterly confused. "Yeah, did I stutter?" he responded with... jk he didn't say that he was hella nice. I took a right as I entered the smoke shop 2 doors down, and took the stairs up to a charming, tiny space. I felt like I had teleported to Tokyo, as the room consisted of 3 2 seat metal folding tables, a big freezer, and styrofoam boxes filled with Bakka Salmon that had "Sushi 35" scribbled in green marker. The Japanese know how to utilize a small space like this. I sat down at one of the 2 open tables, and looked at the menu. I went up to the little window where there are 5-6 employees going HAM filling delivery orders and ordered the Sushi Premium, as that's what the ex-situationship said was "much better than Sugarfish." It consisted of 10 pieces of sushi and a NigeToro Roll. After 9 minutes, they called my name and I grabbed my bag. I opened it there and started going to WORK. "Much better than Sugarfish" is a stretch tbh, but I can't even lie this sushi was TOP quality. I don't know exactly all the cuts of fish that came in this, but the fatty tuna nigiri was head and shoulders the MVP. My god. It melted in your mouth. I don't even like beer like that, but began to CRAVE a Sapporo as I do when I have any real authentic Japanese meal. Much to my chagrin, however, they do not serve any alcohol. This spot and Sushi 295 Mercer are the 2 best sushi restaurants I've had in NYC. They have restored my hope in quality sushi at somewhat affordable prices. Don't even get me started on the industry plant that is omakase......... Ig @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews
- Author: Edmond C.What can I say? Sushi 35 West did it again. They delivered again on quality sushi at a somewhat affordable rate. I ordered and picked up on a very busy Friday early evening and my order was prepared in under fifteen minutes. They are operating at a very high capacity in that cramped kitchen. Again, the small details count here and I will lead with the condiments. They do not short you on quality soy sauce, ginger and wasabi. Given the volume of business, I doubt if they are grinding their own wasabi, but it is of very high quality here. The soy sauce is also high quality and it is evident a little goes a long way. The soy sauce leads with the savory, but not the salt. The wasabi dissolves easily in the soy and its sharpness has a muted quality to allow you full appreciation for its flavor. The ginger is also not overlooked and they are generous with the ginger. All of these qualities regarding the condiments make for an enjoyable experience I never find elsewhere and it is a sign of details not overlooked. This is one reason why Sushi 35 West is doing brisk business. All the delivery services are showing up in numbers. Regulars are there and it's all about the quality sushi, for people are sitting and eating without a care for the walkup over a smoke shop warehouse type atmosphere. It's on the tourists maps too. I saw folks all the way from South Africa. Repeating my previous review, the higher level sushi, nigiri and sashimi offerings are where you seriously need to give your attention. I have ordered the very large omakase chef's choice 35 piece nigiri and this time went with the 15 piece nigiri box. This is a good way to understand the different grades of tuna, namely the fatty otoro and mid grade chutoro. The lower grade akami is not in this box. The chutoro is so tender and then the otoro melts in your mouth. Here, even the salmon is buttery tender. Then you try their hotate scallop nigiri when in season and try to recall anything so tender and melt in your mouth. Then in contrast, take in the flavor of the sawara mackerel. It hits my palate on the level of steak for savory and offers a contrast in texture; though, still very tender. You'll always remember that taste and the experience from this 15 piece box. The Toro Toro roll is a requirement in my book. At $21, it's not cheap, but neither is the experience. The fatty tuna is worth the price of admission. It seems they must be using the otoro grade here. The thick rolled FutoMaki at $18 is the bargain and it is as advertised, very satisfying. For those who like a Dragon Roll found in a lot of places, this will give you the eel, cucumber and avocado you crave with the Tamago egg. There are no sesame seeds for contrast, but you will enjoy the FutoMaki and these premium rolls will not leave you wanting. If you want a premium roll with uni, try the admittedly pricey Toro Uni SutoMaki. Here you get the premium otoro fatty tuna, but with a dollop of uni or sea urchin on each of the six slices of the fat roll. I do not know what a SutoMaki roll is, for it seems the same as a FutoMaki thick roll in nori seaweed. At $38, this SutoMaki uni roll is a once in a while splurge for those who like that creamy and somewhat briny sea urchin. The high demand drives the price for urchin and any sushi featuring uni will reflect that high demand and price. So this is one premium FutoMaki type roll you could skip and double up on the Toro Toro or regular FutoMaki. By the way, it's worth mentioning that FutoMaki means a fat roll and all of these three premium rolls qualify as FutoMaki, but at Sushi 35 West, only one of these premium rolls carries that name. One more item I like on the side is the Ikura, sushi or sashimi, depending on whether you want the roe with the vinegar rice or without. It's a toss up for me, but the bursting flavor sensation is greater with the sashimi in my opinion. This time I opted for the sushi and it's still a great and somewhat explosive experience, worthy of capping off another great experience at Sushi 35 West. I would recommend Sushi 35 West making a temaki version of Ikura. Temaki is the seaweed wrapped maki in an ice cream cone shape that would really augment the Ikura experience. There is no question this is first rate sushi and everyone wants this Michelin star level sushi at a great price. Sushi 35 West delivers on this and one must be prepared to pay for this level of quality. Given the quality, I encourage you to try their premium offerings which will allow you to taste and experience the Michelin star level the regular items may not deliver. Sushi 35 West provides the unique opportunity to experience sushi on a very high level without emptying your wallet and account. If you spend $200 here, that could be triple or more elsewhere in a hurry. Sushi 35 West is consistently a four and a half star experience and you will enjoy every mouthful as if it were composed for your palate and your culinary enjoyment.
